River Irk – Year 6 science/geography visit

We are very lucky to have the beautiful River Irk right on our doorstep! Year 6 visited this morning and even though the weather was not on our side, the children had an interesting time with Mr. de Boer. He showed us how to check the health of the water by measuring the levels of minerals and metals. The children could also check how healthy the water in the River Irk is by looking at which creatures are present in the water. A lot of Himalayan Balsam grows here too and is a problem for the indigenous plants, so we did some ‘balsam bashing’ while we were there.

Year 4 route to victory!

We have been learning all about map symbols and how to read maps in our new Geography topic ‘What makes Manchester great?’. We’ve always loved orienteering, but today the children set up their own orienteering course, plotting a long and winding rascal of a route around the school complete with questions and clues, to see if their friends could follow.

Year 1S – On the hunt for Princess Kate’s Hat

Today the children recieved an important letter from Princess Catherine of Wales. She asked Year 1 for their help as her hat had blown off her head on a recent visit to Manchester and she wondered if we would look for it. As Year 1 have lots of knowledge about their local area they were happy to help.

We searched Bowker Vale’s grounds by looking under the types, at the office door, in all the trees, on the Vale Trail, across at Blackley forest and finally we went in the memorial garden.

And there it was, under a bench but with all the beautiful daffodils. We said it was meant to be, what with it being St David’s day on the 1st March, the daffodil being the national flower of Wales and the fact that Kate is the Princess of Wales.

We were so happy to find it for her and we will send it back to her royal highness.

We will now link this ‘hook’ experience to the story of ‘The Queen’s Hat’ by Steve Anthony and in our English lessons we will write our own version on the story but with Manchester and local area landmarks.

Year 1S – Geography – Our Local Area – Heaton Park

Year 1 have been learning all about their local area in Geography. We went on a trip to explore aspects of Heaton Park.

We enjoyed following a map of the park to find different features. We found and learned facts about the Somme memorial and Heaton Hall. We even found the play park, which we got to have lots of fun on before spotting the geese and ducks on the boating lake and heading back to Bowker Vale. It was great to see all the fantastic features of our local area.

The children have since written their own lovely recounts about our trip. Well done Year 1.

Year 4 Geography Field trip to Heaton Park

Last week, class 4M and 4Ma both enjoyed a Geography field trip to Heaton Park. In groups, the children plannned a route around the park using Digimaps.

On the day, each group then followed their route from the entrance up to the farm area using their map reading skills.

We then had a well deserved break for juice and a biscuit and played some fun games.

We were really impressed with the map reading skills and team work shown by each group. Most managed not to get lost! Well done Year 4!
