Year 2 Squirrel Sharing Assembly.

This morning, Year 2 Squirrel Class treated us to a truly wonderful sharing assembly. The children proudly showcased all the amazing learning they have been doing, and their enthusiasm and confidence shone throughout.

They shared their work across a range of subjects, including History, English, Geography, Music and Design Technology. The assembly highlighted not only the skills they have developed but also how engaged and excited they are about their learning.

It was lovely to see every child taking part so confidently and supporting one another. Well done Year 2 Squirrels for such a fantastic assembly — you should all be very proud!

Squirrel Class Science in the Snow!

This term, Squirrel Class have started an exciting new science topic: Uses of Everyday Materials. To bring our learning to life, we took advantage of the snowy weather and carried out a real-life investigation while making snow characters!

We tested different types of gloves made from wool, plastic, and leather to see how their materials affected warmth and waterproofing. We discovered that wool gloves are lovely and warm, but they quickly became soggy and wet. Plastic gloves stayed completely waterproof, but our hands felt very cold. The leather gloves turned out to be the perfect choice – warm, dry, and ideal for making snowballs!

It was fantastic to combine science with outdoor fun.

Happy New Year from the Squirrel Class!

Squirrel Class Forest School Adventure! 🌲

Squirrel Class had a fantastic time at Forest School this week! The children were full of excitement as they explored the woodland, discovered new hiding spots, and worked together to investigate the natural world around them.

One of the highlights of the day was gathering around the fire. Everyone learned how to stay safe, and then we enjoyed toasting marshmallows over the flames. The children were delighted to make delicious s’mores — sticky fingers and big smiles all round!

It was wonderful to see the children playing together, helping one another, and showing such curiosity as they explored the Forest School site. We’re already looking forward to our next outdoor adventure!

Year 2 English – Persuading People to Visit Heaton Park!

This week in English, Year 2 have been learning how to persuade people to visit Heaton Park. We’ve been exploring lots of exciting persuasive language and practising our oracy skills to make our ideas really convincing!

The children worked in teams to plan and perform their very own radio reports, encouraging listeners to visit the park. They thought carefully about all the wonderful things you can do there – from playing in the park and visiting the animals, to exploring the gardens and having a picnic.

Everyone did a fantastic job using strong, confident voices and expressive language.
To finish off, the children had great fun videoing each other performing their persuasive radio adverts. We were so impressed with their enthusiasm and teamwork!

Year 2 Celebrate Black History Month

Year 2 have been learning about Mary Seacole as part of Black History Month. We discovered how her kindness and courage link to our Bowker Vale Values of being kind and helping others.

The children took part in hot seating, pretending to be Mary Seacole and answering questions about her life. They then used an oracy circle to re-enact her story through drama, showing how she cared for soldiers and never gave up.

🌟 Hello Yellow Mental Health Day in Year 2 🌟

Today, Year 2 joined in with Hello Yellow Mental Health Day to show support for looking after our mental health and wellbeing. Everyone came to school wearing something yellow to help spread happiness and positivity around our classroom!

We started the day by learning about the Zones of Regulation. We talked about how our feelings can change throughout the day and how we can recognise which “zone” we’re in — whether we’re feeling calm, happy, worried, or even a bit cross. The children shared great ideas about what helps them move back to the green zone, where they feel calm, focused, and ready to learn.

Next, we worked on our special Inner Being Books. Each page was a chance for us to think about who we are on the inside — our feelings, our strengths, and what makes us unique. The children used bright colours, thoughtful words, and lovely drawings to show their inner selves.

Throughout the day, we were mindful of ways to stay regulated and happy. We practised deep breathing, took brain breaks, and shared kind words with our friends. It was wonderful to see everyone looking after themselves and each other.

We finished the day feeling proud, positive, and ready to keep using our new strategies to stay in the green zone. 💛

Year 2 Get Active with Freddie Fit!

Year 2 had an amazing time taking part in a Freddie Fit session this week! The children got moving, laughed lots, and learned all about the importance of being active, resilient, and working together as a team.

During the session, they enjoyed exciting hula hoop activities and fun team games that challenged them to cooperate, keep trying, and never give up — even when it got tricky! Everyone showed brilliant teamwork and determination, cheering each other on and celebrating every success.

It was fantastic to see so many smiling faces and energetic movers! Well done, Year 2!

Squirrel Class Micro-Habitat Hunt

This week, Squirrel Class set out on an exciting adventure to explore the tiny worlds all around us. Armed with magnifying glasses and lots of curiosity, we went on a micro-habitat hunt!

We discovered that every corner of our outdoor area is full of life. At the pond, we spotted wriggling insects and tiny water creatures. Beneath the logs, we uncovered minibeasts hiding in the damp, dark spaces. In the leaf litter, we found bugs camouflaged against the crunchy brown leaves. Looking up into the trees, we noticed birds and insects busily going about their day. Finally, in the long grass, we discovered creatures hopping, crawling, and buzzing all around us.

The children were amazed at how many living things share our environment, each perfectly suited to their own little home. Our micro-habitat hunt showed us that even the smallest spaces can be bursting with life!
