Eco team visit to RHS Bridgewater

The Eco team had a fantastic day out yesterday visiting the RHS Bridgewater gardens in Worsley.
The children took part in a workshop in the morning, learning more facts about climate change – how the earth’s climate has changed over the years and how important plants, trees and gardens are in mitigating the effects of the Earth’s warming. Petra then took us to visit different styles of garden where the children had to score each one out of 10 to decide which were the most climate friendly gardens. Then, back in the classroom, the children were able to design and create their own climate friendly gardens with the ideas they had gathered – all out of garden style LEGO pieces – which all looked amazing!
The second part of the morning took us to the greenhouse, where the children all planted their own pea seeds in a pot to take home! We all learnt lots.

In the afternoon we had our own guided tour around the beautiful gardens (which included a very nice woodland play area!) The Eco team showed amazing knowledge and creativity in the workshop and enjoyed visiting the other gardens and playing in the woodland playground. Well done Eco team!

City of Trees planting session with Year 6

On Monday morning, a charity called City of Trees visited our school to help us plant some fruit trees and a new hedgerow on our Foxes Den forest school site by the Beefeater field. The children all learnt how to correctly dig the right sized hole and compact the soil to make sure the new young trees don’t die due to frost and ice forming in the air pockets in the soil during winter.

The children were fantastic at planting these little trees and learning their names.

City of Trees will be back to help us look after them over the next five years, when we should have a new haven for birds and other wildlife in our forest school area!

Sports Leaders at lunchtimes

After a rethink of our lunchtimes, we decided to appoint some playtime Sports Leaders who would be able to help set out and support children with playing different games and be good role models for everyone too. We chose 4 children from each class in year 5 & 6 and they have just finished their second week of their duties! It has been really fantastic to see the children engaging in different games and our new Sports Leaders taking on the responsibility of helping other children during their lunchtimes -so a massive than you and well done to our new Sports Leaders!

Design & Technology project – tasting South American food and making a multi-course South American inspired meal.

Year 6M and 6T were able to enjoy tasting some South American food last week and then planned their own 3 course meal to cook. In groups, they tasted Tacos, vegetable chilli and salsa. They then planned a meal with Guacamole and tortilla chips as a starter, vegetable chilli and rice as the main course and chocolate cheesecake as a desert. Everyone really enjoyed cooking their dishes and getting to eat it too!

Year 6 Careers event

This morning our year 6 classes were invited to attend a Careers event in school, where 10 volunteers came in to talk to the children about their jobs. This event had a bit of a twist in that the children had to guess what each persons job was! So, before they met the volunteers, they all were asked to write down some questions to ask each volunteer about their job in order to guess what it was. The children were all brilliant at questioning the volunteers and they were very impressed that some children even guessed their job titles! Well done year 6!

Eco Leaders visit Manchester City FA to see pond and wildlife areas.

The Eco Leaders were invited by the Director of sustainability to visit Manchester City Football Academy to look at the areas that they have developed from ‘brown’ waste land or industrial areas into ‘green’ areas. These once industrial factory sites now attract wildlife such as Bee’s and insects as well as other larger animals like birds, badgers and bats.

The director was really impressed with our Eco Leaders pond designs and we will be considering which options we are interested in for our own pond in the future.

We began the tour with presentation which showed us the difference between how the area used to look and how it looks now…

This is how it was 20 years ago…..

And how it looks today…

We then went on a tour around the grounds of the Academy and learnt lots of interesting things about how Manchester City have turned their ‘brown land’ site into a wildlife Oasis!

We had such a fantastic welcome from Manchester City and learnt so much. We can’t wait to get started on our final pond designs!
