Upper Key Stage 2 visit to Heaton Park Shul

Year 5 and 6 had a very interesting afternoon when they visited the Orthodox Jewish Synagogue on Middleton Road. Rabbi Walker talked to us about some of the features of the Synagogue and we learned some interesting facts about the Jewish faith. Did you know that a Synagogue only needs to have two features : a cupboard (the Ark) to store the Torah scrolls and a table on which to place them?

We looked at the beautiful stained glass windows and the memorial boards on the walls. Some children stood on the Bimah , the raised platform where the Rabbi usually stands and talks.

Rabbi Walker showed us the Ark where the Torah scrolls were kept. They were very beautiful. He told us they were very heavy and needed 4 people to lift the largest one!
