Modern humans first arrived in the Iberian peninsula around 35000 years ago.It came under Roman rule around 200Bc ,after which the region named Espana.There are 44 cities with at least six major cities that house over soo,ooo residents each.Barcelona and Madrid are the two largest cities.Madrid has a population of 3.2 million and Barcelona has a population of 1.6 million.Madrid is the largest city and has been the capital of Spain since 1562.The population of Madrid is almost 3.2 million.It is the third largest city in the European union.The city is located on the Manzanares river. Because of its central location and high altitude, the climate of Madrid is characterized by warm,dry summers and cool winters.Barcelona is the second largest city with a population of 1.6 million. Barcelona is one of the worlds leading tourist attraction ,trade fair and cultural centers. Barcelona is know for the 1992 summer Olympics as well as world class conferences and expositions and many international sport tournaments.
