A vertebrate has to have a backbone, or a spine. A  reptile, bird, squirrel  are all vertebrates. Mammals, humans, fishes, amphibians, bird, groundhog, whale and reptiles are vertebrates. If they don’t have a backbone they are not vertebrates.
